Does BC MSP Cover Eye Exams?

Navigating BC’s Medical Services Plan (MSP) can bring up a lot of questions, especially when it comes to your family’s vision care. You might wonder if your next visit to an eye doctor in Kelowna is covered and what you can expect. It’s a common question, and we’re here to help clear things up.

The answer depends on your age and your medical needs. MSP provides coverage for certain groups and situations, but even those who are eligible should plan for some out-of-pocket costs, as MSP does not fully cover the entire bill in BC. This guide will walk you through how MSP coverage for eye exams works for you and your loved ones.

MSP Eye Exam Coverage for Adults (19–64)

For most adults between the ages of 19 and 64, routine eye exams are not covered by MSP. However, coverage is available for appointments that are considered medically necessary. This means that your visit is prompted by a specific health concern.

What Is a Medically Required Eye Exam?

An eye exam is medically required if you have an eye or health condition that needs monitoring by an optometrist. This can help protect your vision and overall well-being. Examples of medically required situations include:

  • Eye diseases—such as glaucoma, cataracts, or retinal diseases
  • Eye injuries or the presence of foreign objects in the eye
  • Eye emergency such as many causes of pink eyes or eye pain
  • Systemic diseases that can affect your eyes, like diabetes
  • Certain medications with potential side effects on your vision

MSP only covers eye exams when they are medically necessary. Routine exams for healthy eyes, including prescription updates, are not covered, meaning the cost would be your responsibility.

Eye Exam Coverage for Children & Seniors

MSP provides coverage for BC’s youngest and oldest residents. This helps make sure they have access to regular eye care, to ensure early detection of eye problems. For children this helps avoid learning difficulties associated with eye problems (for example kids who need glasses but haven’t been prescribed any yet). And for seniors, it helps promote the early detection of disease that can threaten vision without early intervention. We’re happy to see these groups receive extra support.

Children (0–18 Years)

MSP helps families by offsetting the cost of one routine eye exam each year for children up to 18 years old. Regular check-ups for kids can support their learning and development.

Seniors (65 & Over)

MSP does not cover routine eye exams for seniors. Coverage applies only when an exam is considered medically necessary, such as when there are new symptoms, a change in vision, or monitoring of diagnosed eye conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy or cataracts. In those cases, MSP contributes toward the assessment, but patients are usually responsible for a portion of the fee. Routine annual checkups are still encouraged for early detection, and for those visits, seniors should plan for out of pocket costs or use private insurance.

A Closer Look at Eye Exams for Your Child

Your child’s vision is a key part of how they learn and experience the world. We believe that every child deserves clear vision, which is why we focus on making eye care accessible and thorough for young families in our community.

Why a Full Exam Is Different From a School Screening

While schools may offer basic vision screenings, our in-office comprehensive eye exams go much further. Using modern technology like Optos imaging and MYAH for axial length measurements in nearsighted kids, we can assess not only how well your child sees, but also check for signs of eye disease and track early changes in nearsightedness, which is an important part of myopia control.

These tools don’t travel to schools, but they’re standard in our exams. When it comes to your child’s vision, we believe in giving them every advantage possible.

What If My Eye Exam Isn’t Covered by MSP?

If your eye exam is not covered by MSP, you will be responsible for the cost of the appointment. At Tutt Street Optometry, we are always transparent about our fees.

The Cost of an Eye Exam in BC

The cost of an eye exam in BC can vary. The final fee often depends on the type of exam you receive and the kinds of tests you may need based on your vision and health history. The best approach is to ask about the fees before your appointment.

Other Coverage Options

Many people have additional vision care coverage through their workplace benefits or private insurance plans. It’s a great idea to review your personal plan to see what services and products it may cover. This often includes a portion of costs for exams, glasses, or contact lenses.

Services Not Covered by MSP

It’s helpful to know what MSP doesn’t cover, so you can plan for your eye care expenses. For adults aged 19–64 without a medically required condition, MSP typically does not pay for the following:

Some government programs, such as those for individuals receiving income or disability assistance, may provide support for eyeglasses. It’s worth looking into these programs if you think you might qualify for additional help.
