Your eyes are one of your most valuable assets—they allow you to see, learn, and engage with the world around you. Yet, it’s easy to overlook the importance of taking care of them. Regular eye exams are essential, not just for helping keep your vision healthy, but also for detecting potential health issues. But how much should you expect to pay for an eye exam in BC?

On average, an eye exam in BC costs anywhere from $75 to $250. This range can vary depending on multiple factors, including the type of exam and where you go for your appointment.

The Average Cost of Eye Exams in BC

The cost of an eye exam in BC depends on several elements, including the type of exam you need. Here are the kinds of eye exams you can typically expect:

  • Routine eye exam: The standard comprehensive eye exam you should get about every year can check visual acuity and overall eye health. For kids (age 9 months to 18 years) and seniors (65+) it should be yearly, but it is actually appropriate for those aged 19-65 to have biannual exams (in the absence of other diseases). This generally lands on the more affordable end of the spectrum but can vary for adults in the age group of 19 to 65. This is because BC’s Medical Services Plan(MSP) does not cover certain eye exams like visits for refractive changes for this age group.
  • Contact lens fitting: Contact lenses are an exciting alternative to glasses, but they require some finesse to get just right. An optometrist uses a contact lens fitting to measure the eye and get you a lens that fits you like a glove. The fee can vary depending on the type of contact lens and complexity of prescription. For example, soft contacts are less costly than sclerals or rigid gas permeable lenses to fit.
  • Specialized tests: Tests such as special imaging for the macula, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), or visual field testing are often an extra cost, adding anywhere from $25 to $100 depending on the clinic.

Many optometrists offer all of these exams and more, so they aren’t the only factor affecting cost. You may also pay more, or less, because of the following:

  • Location: Urban clinics may charge higher fees than clinics in smaller towns, reflecting higher operational costs in larger cities.
  • Technology: Clinics using advanced technology, such as optos wide angle retinal imaging, tend to charge more for their exams. However, these technologies can provide deeper insights into your eye health.
  • Additional services: Services like ILUX, nuLids, or zest treatment for diseases such as blepharitis and meibomian gland dysfunction fall under this category and may incur extra charges. If you’re getting any of these specific treatments, expect additional costs.
  • Experience of the optometrist: Clinics with highly experienced practitioners may charge a premium for their expertise and care.

Because costs can vary so much, you should always contact your local optometrist to see what they charge. Remember, cheaper options aren’t always better when it comes to your health.

Why Regular Eye Exams Matter

While knowing the cost is important, so is understanding why eye exams are worth the investment. Regular eye exams are not just about updating your prescription—they serve as a window into your overall health.

Here are some key reasons to prioritize routine check-ups:

  • Detect vision issues: Optometrists can diagnose and correct refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism during an exam. For kids, good vision can mean the difference between succeeding in school or struggling to make the grade.
  • Prevent vision loss: Conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy often don’t show symptoms until significant damage has occurred. Eye exams can uncover these hidden symptoms and prevent further vision loss.
  • Assess overall health: Eye exams are about more than just your vision. Your optometrist can identify signs of broader health issues, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or autoimmune disease like rheumatoid arthritis, by examining your eyes.

Skipping exams can mean missing early warning signs of serious conditions. Prioritizing your eye health today can help prevent bigger health challenges tomorrow. Your eyes deserve the same care and attention as the rest of your body—stay ahead of potential issues with routine check-ups!

Eye Exam Coverage in BC

If the cost of an eye exam for your family has you stressed, there are a few ways to make them more budget-friendly. Start by looking at your extended health insurance plan. Many employer-provided or private insurance plans include coverage for routine eye exams. If you’re unsure of your coverage, check with your insurance provider about eligibility and limits. Remember, these benefits usually renew each year, so use them before you lose them!

Alternatively, BC’s Medical Services Plan (MSP) provides partial or full coverage for eye exams in certain circumstances. In general, MSP covers:

  • Annual eye exams for children under 19 and seniors over 64.
  • Medically necessary exams, such as those required due to illness, or when an eye disease or disorder is noted during your visit.
  • Exams to screen for ocular side effects of certain high risk medications

The final thing you can do to protect your budget is to schedule your eye exam before any issues arise. Avoiding emergency visits for unaddressed concerns can save you money in the long run.
