Types of Eye Emergencies
Foreign Object
Do not try to remove the object with tweezers or anything else. Resist the urge to rub your eye or apply pressure. You may want to use a clean cloth to cover the eye while you pursue care. Keep your eye as still as possible and seek medical care immediately.
Cuts or Scratches
If you have a cut near or on your eye, you need to seek medical attention. You can apply a cold compress to your eye to help with the pain and inflammation, but be careful not to apply pressure.
Chemical Splashes
If any sort of chemical makes contact with your eye, you need to flush it out immediately. Using an eyewash station, a sink, or even a shower, put the affected eye under a stream of cool water.
You may feel instantaneous relief, but it’s important that you continue to rinse your eye for at least 15 minutes to thoroughly clear out the chemical. If you’re wearing contacts and they haven’t come out after flushing your eyes, do your best to remove them.
You should then seek immediate medical attention.
